What is a good road bike for a beginner? I'm hoping to spend $250-$400.?

I don't mind if it is used. I did one Sprint triathlon and borrowed a friend's bike. I really enjoyed it and want to do it again but I'm not looking to buy a tri bike. Thanks for any input.
