What is a good real life application of statistics?

Hi. I am doing a problem for my Statistics course and we have to do a presentation on a real life application of statistics. We already have some ideas, but I was looking for some things that might be a little out of the ordinary or unexpected.

Please, be clear and give a few details. Thank you :)
 
Money both micro and macro, Gambling, Medical research, Game theory, linguistics, just to name a few.

Anything that involves the analysis of real world data. No theories, models, etc, just data.
 
Statistics has quite a lot of applications in industry particularly with respect to quality control. Most manufacturing processes require items to meet certain specifications. Systematic sampling of items as they come off the production line can ensure that the overwhelming majority of items meet these specifications.
