What is a good photography camera thats not expensive?

Im going to be taking photography as a freshman and you need one of those old black cameras?! i dont know what they are called. but people say they cost alot and i really like photography so...if you could help tht would b great thanks.
UHHH i like photography and want to learn about it thats why im taking the class!!!! geez
