What is a good peaceful fish for a 20 gallon tank?

I know my tank isn't the biggest, but I don't have a whole lot of space right now, since I just graduated from college. I have 4 green (cory) catfish in it and a couple of days ago I had 4 dwarf gouramis. I went to my local petsmart and asked for a good peaceful community fish. I asked about the dwarf gouramis because they struck me as beautiful. They told me that they are very peaceful. WHAT LIES! I get them home and even though there are plenty of hiding spaces, they all seemed to compete for a big log in the center of the tank. I had 2 male flame dwarf gouramis and 2 male power blue gouramis. The largest flame gourami was the king and he ruled the others. I tolerated this until he became so aggressive he attacked any gourami in the tank constantly. I removed him, and immediately the other flame gourami took his place as king and abuser. I then removed him. Now there are only two power blue gouramis in with the cories and the more active blue powder gourami is now king and inhabits the center log. He viciously chases away the other gourami, so the other gourami is forced to hide in a corner by himself. What am I supposed to do? I've tried a betta with the corydoras and he attacked them. I tried gouramis that I was told her peaceful and they were super aggressive. What is a good fish (preferably not boring one) that will fit in a 20 gallon freshwater tank? Please help!
