I'm thinking less than $200. I just need a decent all-purpose bike for paths or roads.

Any suggestions?

Also, what should I look for? I haven't had a bike since I was a kid so I haven't been on a bike for about 20 years.
If I go the used route, what features should I look for?

You cant buy a bike for $200 anywhere unless you are buying used or buying a heavy junkyard metal covered up in shiny paint they sell at walmart. Now if you spent maybe $400 to get a hybrid bicycle then you could visit your local bike shop and they will have some options for you. You wont even get a decent bike on ebay for $200.

I dont know where you get this idea to buy a bicycle for $200. Most bikes are worthless nowadays unless you spend atleast $1,000. My first road bike was worth $1,200. Prior to that I had numerous mountain bikes while growing up and all of them cost over $200 even back in the early 90s.

Its 2008 now. Even back in the early 90s It cost more than $200 to buy a bicycle. So I dont know where you get this idea to get a bike for $200.

$300 or less and you can get a pretty fair quality bike from a bike shop.
you can get the bike. some tire liners, heavy duty tubes with Slime anti flat sealant and most bike shops with let you bring the bike in for free adjustments within the first 30-90day.
i'm riding a 15yr old bike i paid $500 new. i also have a 3speed bike that i paid $50 for at a garage sale. i love to ride them both. i'm going to a giant business sponsered garage sale this weekend and hope to find another bike too.
you can go to youtube and type in how to pick a bicycle. there are several quality videos. also, below is a build your own bike video. it's worth looking at. just to see how you can get by for next to nothing if you want.

in that price range there isnt going to be a lot of selection. new you are looking at a walmart or toyr us level. I would hold out though because you could get a good deal on a used one if you shop around some. Look at pawn shops or garage sales. They may not be the latest greatest thing out but you could end up with what was a $1000 bike new not that long ago.
