Chris Hadfield ‘s announcement in September of 2010 has everyone talking. Gary Goodyear, the minister of state for science and technology for Montreal, said the selection of a Canadian to command the space station "reflects the achievements of our space exploration program and the renowned quality of our Canadian Astronaut Corps." Prime Minister Stephen Harper said it was "a great honour, not just for [Hadfield] but for the entire country.
In March of 2013, Hadfield will become the first Canadian to command the International space Station. Chris Hadfield has been assigned to Expedition 34/35 in September 2010.The launch date is December 2012, and the astronauts will be landing in June 2013.
Col. Hadfield, 51, will launch in a Soyuz rocket with cosmonaut Roman Romanenko and NASA astronaut Tom Marshburn. They will be the backup crew for the June 2010 mission to the space station. Hadfield’s crew will be carrying out various experiments during their 6-month stay in space.
For Hadfield, this is a dream come true. When he returned from his second spaceflight in 2001, he said, "The next thing I want to do is command the space station." It's a "tremendous honour", says Chris, "to be trusted … with the entire station." At a news conference, he told listeners "To have this opportunity is extremely challenging, extremely exciting and extremely rewarding."
The crew will have to work together as a team, and it will be Hadfield's job to make sure things run smoothly. The men have already been training with each other for at least a year, to prepare for the mission.
This will be his third trip into space, but easily the most challenging. On rest days, the crew will get a break to play guitar, take pictures, send e-mails and talk to their families over video links.
A comment on an online CTV article about Hadfield’s September announcement said “it reinforces the high calibre of Canadian talent and expertise in this field. Go Canada!” Another said “Congratulations, to Chris Hadfield....we, as Canadians, should be very proud of our space program and astronauts.” What an amazing milestone, eh?
