What is a good first sport bike?

I'm not very familiar with bikes, but I am wanting one. I was thinking about getting a 600 or maybe a bit larger. Because I dont want to purchase a smaller one and have to get a larger one a few months afterwards. Also, what are some good brands and what kind of payment would I be looking at?
