I like books that challenge the beliefs/morals of characters in an impossible situation like in "The Last Town on Earth" with a good measure of suspense

I'm one of those crazy hermits that loves analyzing themes and symbols, but nothing overly complicated.

With that being said I also like simple books that are fun to read like Artemis Fowl (albeit with a large vocabulary).

To give you a better idea, I like

The Last Town on Earth
Artemis Fowl
Jurassic Park
A Farewell to Arms
Maiden Voyage.

On the other hand I do not like Invisible Man since it is how society impacts one man, not the other way around. In other words, 'Nice analysis book, just too boring." I also dislike the writing style of Dan Brown in "Angels & Demons" (too cliched and little development of characters)

I am currently reading "The Colony" by John Tayman and am considering buying "The Plague" by Camus

I dislike Happily Ever Afters but I don't hate them

Any suggestions on good, suspenseful, deeply "themed" books?
