what is a face primer and face foundation?

i am a south Indian girl.i don't do makeup at all but i saw some makeup videos in you-tube that i want to give it a try.i am not clear with purpose of face primer and foundation.can somebody tell me about it in detail.please tell me how to do a regular simple makeup daily.does foundation make skin fairer?does it lighten dark circles under eyes?please suggest me a branded primer and foundation
