What is a cheap fast road bike?

I want some bike that can take me to places in a short amount of time and i am thinking about a road bike but not the big ones with the gears and every fancy things but there is this one bike i saw that was colorful and it only had brakes and was a road bike but no gears that was about $700 and that is good but what are some good bikes like that. I am not sure if i should get a bmx bike or the road bike but also what are some good and cheap road bikes and that are nice and fun. Thank you
