What is a BMX bike/can they be 'fake'?

My son has a BMX style of bike (he's only 9), which we got new from a car boot and only paid a small amount, not the huge amount you see them sold for. Obviously we don't expect to have an amazing one because of the price. However, some other boys have been teasing him that it's a 'fake' - what do they mean? Is there a 'proper' type/make or are they just another style of bike, same as 'mountain' style or 'racer' style?
Thanks for your help!

there can't a fake BMX unless it is the rong type if it has gears it is a mountin bike if it has not it is a bmx

When kids call it fake, they mean it a cheap bike that isn't made for stunts. If your sons bmx bike is "fake" its either a GT, Mongoose, Redline, Fly, Phoenix, or Huffy

There are certain respected brands for BMX bikes, and people who are very into BMX as a sport are often loyal to one or more of these brands. There are less expensive options within this world of legitimate BMX equipment, as well, though they're still on the pricey side. Then, there are bikes sold at Wal-Mart or Toys-R-Us that are made to look like the quality bikes, but are often much heavier, and break under normal BMX use (riding trails with ramps, and/or doing tricks.)

In my opinion, your kid is 9... let him run this one into the ground and if he's still gung-ho about BMX in a while, it's time to investigate a better bike (which he will then appreciate). If he shows particular interest in either BMX racing or freestyle BMX, it will make sense to buy a bike suitable to his particular interest. Until then, tell his rich little jerk friends to shove it!
