What is a bluetooth passkey?

I have a UT starcom phone and my friend is trying to pair her samsung phone with mine so she can give me some ringtones but on her phone it says enter passkey? and Idk what that is...:|
 
She has to write a number say 1234 and then it will come up on your phone to enter the passkey and you have to write 1234 as well
