What is 3G vodafone or aircel etc? Is it costy ?is it better than wifi or gprs?

now a days , i always watch 3G network what is this ? I use simple gprs ! I want to use 3G network on my mobile but what r the merits and demerits of 3g compare to gprs ? Help
