what impact do wind turbines have on the environment?

The two most common arguments people have against wind turbine generation of electricity is that they're unsightly and that birds get killed when they run into the turbine blades. In areas where high winds are possible, there is also the possibility that the turbines could go too fast and blow themselves apart. There's a You Tube video of a turbine somewhere in Europe that blows itself apart from excessive speed during a strong wind storm. People are also concerned about the turbines making noise, especially if they become unbalanced.

Ironically, the only place I've seen wind farms on a large scale besides Banning Pass in Southern California on the way to Palm Springs is in the hills of West Maui on the way to Lahaina from Kahului airport. So, if the Hawaiians don't have a problems with wind turbines on what would otherwise be a pristine hillside, why should anyone else have a problem with it?
