What if somebody asked your opinion and you lied so as not to hurt them?

I know somebody who sees themselves as an artist. This person is financially stable due to a large trust and is producing art which is awful. There is a show coming up and I know I will be asked my opinion.
Should I lie and just continue massaging their ego?
or
Based on the view that true freinds are the ones who tell us the things we don't want to hear - say what I think?
