What if: Harry Potter had its own animated series?

I mean, if Kids WB! and Warner Bros. Animation can have enough money to produce a series to continue the franchise. It can premiere in late 2008 if WB has the power to do it (which they can).

What do you members think?

I am sort of surprised at the aspect that a Harry Potter series hasn't been attempted, but it is understandable. I mean despite being made for kids, Harry Potter isn't exactly Saturday Morning cartoon material and I'm sure J.K Rowling wants to make sure everything with the Potter name on it like that has the Potter spirit inside. Sure it could do well, but it would take at least till 2008 to work out the legal issues probably. Not to mention it seems too late in the game for a series: I mean the seventh book is coming out in a month and I doubt despite many people's complaints there will be any offical addons to it. Also a series after the movie would mean the kids would be like nearing adulthood and I don't think KidsWB would want to have that for a HP series. It'd have more luck coming to Toonami really but even there I'd worry about quality and if they'd be able to find the right tone for it. I say just let the books and the movies tell the story and don't try budding it into a series this late in the game.

Would the series take place before, during or after the Potter books/movies? I doubt that it would take place after book 7, as that would mean that Harry and the other children would be nearing the end of their teen years. Kids WB would most likely want an HP Saturday morning show to focus on Harry's early years at Hogwarts. Younger characters would have more kid appeal and there would be a wider possibility for episodes. Anyway, it's been over 6 and books and what 5, 6 movies now? If J.K. Rowling and Warner Brothers had any desire to make a Harry Potter TV series, they would have started one by now.

Lots of things could happen. Conceivably, Disney could produce an Incredibles animated series if they wanted to, but I don't see that happening either.

If J.K. Rowling doesn't/didn't want a Harry Potter cartoon show, then there won't/wouldn't be one. Period. In any event, it wouldn't be ready to roll by 2008, even if such a project were greenlit today. As Neo said, it would take at least that long to get the legal mumbo-jumbo out of the way. Plus, if anybody were going to spin Harry Potter off into a cartoon show, they should've done it a lot sooner than 7 books into it. Also, the HP books and movies get pretty dark and violent, and TV shows have to be cleaned up considerably. A HP show would probably be so homogenized that it would most likely turn off most of its' fanbase. Like I said, if Rowling doesn't want the franchise to continue in any way, shape or form, then it won't.

I haven't thought about it before as I couldn't care less about HP as it is, but I think it would have potential to be an enjoyable cartoon if they made DRASTIC changes, like put him in a normal setting where he's unique, get rid of hoards of geezers which troll the movies/books and you'd have potential for a great 24 or 12 minute cartoon. I imagine something not too similar to Johnny Quest.

Maybe an anime maybe not.

That'll happen the day scientists prove the tooth fairy exists.

The books and movies are uber-popular with the kids; there's no way they'd put kiddie-popular fare on Adult Swim.

Toonami, on the other hand? Perhaps, but AS is just reaching too far.

I always thought live-action would work better, but I guess with a decent enough budget, either way...
Uh, yeah, makes sense, since he's very little like him.
How so?
Really? Because I'd have to agree with the idea that, this way, they wouldn't have to cut out a third (or more) of the books' material.

Wasn't there word some years ago that KidsWB wanted such a show but it never got made? I can't really see it working. The books have a very tight narrative, so there's not really any room to put in 'unseen adventures'.

I always assumed if they did this it would be like litle side adventures that take place in between the Voldemort battles, like other evil creatures they have to deal with while at school and what not.

You know what... I was just thinking about that the other day.

I think it would be pretty cool.

The only question is, what station would it be on. CN, Nick, Disney, or someone else?

Back when the books first became cool, I thought that they could do such a thing. It would just be adventures of the Hogwarts gang, not nesessarly based on the book. Now I think that it is too late for that.

Why in the world would the Japanese make a Harry Potter anime? The books are made in England and the movies are made by Americans, how do the Japanese factor in? Unless J.K Rowling went to some anime studio and asked them to make a Harry Potter cartoon, I don't see how an Harry Potter anime would be created and that is very unlikely.

Besides do the Japanese have a good track record of adapting Western concepts? The TMNT anime OAV was a joke and in the Witchblade anime they changed Witchblade from an Italian American to a Japanese woman.

It's pretty popular over there, and you can find it's influence in a lot of their stuff (Negima, Naruto, etc) If they can make adaptions of Deltora Quest, Powerpuff Girls Z, Earthsea, and Witchblade and I wouldn't put it past them to make a Harry Potter one.

Just because they're horrible doesn't negate that they exist, but I agree I'd rather not see a Japanese take on it.
