What holds up in small claims court?

A guy bought my car with a signed note saying he would pay the remaining x amount by x date. he hasn't done this and I've gone in circles with him trying to get it from him. I have a text message conversation in which we states he isn't going to pay me because he isn't happy with the car. If i were to get this conversation from Verizon and have it printed out would it hold up as evidence in small claims court? I have been told I have to prove he sent the txt messages which aside from them coming from his phone how can I prove that?

And if it doesn't, how likely is it that I would win. He can't prove he payed it but I can't prove he didn't aside from the txt messages and the note. Would my word and the note be enough since he obviously isn't going to be able to prove he paid me since he didn't.

You have a signed paper saying he'll pay. If his defense to a lawsuit was "I already paid him", then he needs to provide evidence that he did so.

If the texts are still in your phone then I'd just take your phone to court. Small claims court judges will usually accept those.
