I just purchased a road bike. I have only ridden a mtn. bike over the past 16 yrs. The top tube is perfect (1.5-2 inches standover), but when I raise the seat to the perfect height, I have to tilt the bars to an extreme angle to grab the brakes. The bottom of the bars do not work at a plane equivalent to the top tube. I am 5'10" and the bike is a 52.
My inseam is only 30 inches. I had considered upgrading the stem, but was looking for statistical figures to go by. Standover is perfect, I just need to know the ratio of seat to handlebars.......
I am familiar with the perfect seat to pedal ratio, and I have set that, sans fore/aft based upon not yet achieving the correct height for the handlebars.....
