What happens when new phone service activates your number before you receive the phone?

I ported my number over so I will need my old service and phone to work up until I receive my new phone and service. Although, I received an email stating: "Your phone has just been activated. It is now ready for shipment." Does this disable my old service and does it mean I will be out phone service until my new phone shipment comes in? This is NOT good as I cannot be without a phone to call or receive calls. Thanks!
