What happens when body samples are taken at a police station during booking?

A friend of mine had to report to a local jail earlier today to provide "body samples" as part of an investigation and booking process. He is a 23 year old male and is currently treated as a suspect in a criminal case. He was told that they would take a "full range" of body samples from him today, as well as book him, but what exactly does this mean? I drove him to the jail and left him at the reception area, where they made him take off his shoes, frisked him and then took him into a room labeled "male processing." I waited for around 15 minutes, and then saw an officer walk out of that room with a transparent bag containing my friend's clothing. I was not told how long this would all take and whether I should wait for him in the reception area until they are done with him. After around 45 minutes, I just left and drove home, not knowing what to do and having received no information. I feel bad about leaving him there--he doesn't have any relatives in this city--so I'm not sure what to do. What is happening to him?
