what happens to the old phone after i get a new phone on my sprint plan?

i have sprint, and i have the samsung moment and i am about to buy an htc hero WITHOUT EXTENDING MY CONTRACT. {buying the full price of the phone}

when i switch my service to the hero, will the samsung moment be locked? or will it be a clean esn??

plz help thanks :)
