I'm an independent game developer with a few titles out and I came across a game I used to play as a kid. It was a great game and I am thinking about doing an re-imaging of it.
It was first published in 1985, for the apple II by one company. They also ported it to several other systems. Then went out of business. Another company, a venture Capital company picked up the game rights and several others. As far as I can tell they went out of business in 2006.
I can't seem to find any info on who owns the game now.
I certainly don't want to steal a game, but it's an old game that probably no one remembers. So I could potentially just take it, or take the parts I like.
But the question still stands, does anyone know what happens to a game companies copyrights after they go out of business? Don't suppose they are on the fast track to public domain?
