I was shocked to discover that the City of Chicago's public school system has a drop out rate of over 50%. http://www.usatoday.com/news/education/2006-06-20-dropout-rates_x.htmWhat happens to those people?I've found it difficult to get a decent job, and I have B.A. I'm told that a liberal arts degree is now worth what a high school diploma was back in 1950's.Industry has been declining in America since the late 1960's so there aren't that many factory jobs. I'd imagine ever those jobs would want a high school diploma. The military won't take someone who hasn't finished high school either.Where do those people go?

They either:1.) Decide to go back and get their GED and possibly a college education and therefore they become well functioning members of society.2.) They sell dope.3.) They work fast food, department stores, etc.4.) They start out at an entry level job at like Wal-Mart or a fast food place and work their way up to management.5.) They live on welfare by claiming disability, etc.

Hopefully they realize they made a mistake and go back to school. Get SOMETHING.

they start working at shitty jobs like mcdonalds and burger king. or maybe even worse. and they stay on welfare and food stamps cuz they wont be able to afford any place to live.

A bachelor's isn't worthless. It can lead to med school or law school. I'm getting a bachelor's not only for a career in administration but also because I can use it to apply to law school. A diploma means nothing nowadays.

The ones I know are wanna be rappers, been wanna be rappers for the past 15 years since high school, babies mamas at home on welfare, or just living with someone who is taking care of them.

Some join the military, some get piss-poor jobs, some get their GEDS and go on, some turn to gangs, some eventually finish, some sell drugs, some commit suicide, and others become multi-millionaires (not that often).

I can tell you for a fact that some of these dropouts have lied their way into a prestigious job, become my bosses and then fired me for reminding them how undereducated they are.

I dropped out of school when i was 16 due severe depression,i deeply regretted it,i was actually top 3 in most classes. Now I'm a stage manager and love it,it also encouraged my writing so i wrote a play.the local theatre i started out in is even staging a production of it later in the year.In 2 years time i qualify for the free adult back to education programme in my country(Ireland),i will be able study anything from law to medicine...haven't decided yet what i want to study or if i even will, but its great that i have the choice and that such a programme exists.I tell you,i would be going back to school with a much wiser and humbled head on my shoulders.I just wanted to point out that not all drop-outs are losers, who only work in McDonald's and smoke pot all day,I also want to encourage other school drop outs that not all is lost, you can change things and hurdles can be over come.

it depends on the type of person you are. if you know you want to go far and will do anything to make sure you achieve your goals, then nothing can stop you from doing that. nothing is ever to hard to accomplish.

I dropped out of high school during my senior year. A year later, I got my G.E.D. and now I'm in college. I'm studying to be a physical therapist. Please don't stereotype. School isn't for everyone but nobody wants to be a nobody.
