What happens if I change my main audio program from Windows Media Player to Itunes?

I have a few friends who want to put some of the music from my library onto their Ipods. If I do this, will Itunes convert all the mp3 files to aac? Will this conversion result in more memory use to store copies of the mp3 files in aac form?

I'm wondering because if so, I won't have enough memory on my computer to do so.
