back in those shakespeare days, english music was a blooming paradise. what had been sowed by dunstable and power was harvested by tallis and byrd and all those excellent madrigalists like weelkes, farnaby, ramsey, wilbye, and the like. then purcell showed up and, except for a handful of unique personalities (stanford, williams, holst and yes, i do count finzi and ireland) is seems as if the english havent been able to live up to those high standards set by themselves about 400 years ago.
is this true or is there anyone who can tell me that im wrong?
thanx a million!
