What happened to all the mental patients in the 1990s?

Prior to the 1990s, there were huge mental hospitals in every county and most cities and large towns throughout GB.

Some of these housed hundred of patients, many deemed to be a risk to society.

When most of these buildings were sold off and turned into flats in the 90s, what happened to all the patients?
