What goes on when you are tested for ADD/ADHD?

I really am wondering if i have one of these. i sometime have trouble concentrating on things. i also frequently forget what i am saying when trying to tell a story. i have trouble focusing a lot too, especially in social situations. but i also mix up letters and numbers horribly so idk if it is dyslexia too or what.

but my question is what goes on in the testing? do they do any physical tests or is it all just questions? and what kind of a doctor can diagnose this? can just my regular doctor?

A psychiatrist would diagnose you for ADHD/ADD (I don't know about who would diagnose the Dyslexia) - My 8 year old daughter was diagnosed by a Psychiatrist with ADHD. I don't know if they'd have you complete a questionairre, but most likely they'd have your parent(s) complete one & your main teacher too, and depending on the answers, that would tell whether you're diagnosed with it, and also based on your behavior that you & your parents describe to the Psychiatrist and the behavior you display during your appointment with the Psychiatrist. After a difficult time with my daughter in school and with me of a little over a year, we tried Focalin XR, just 5 miligrams & the ONLY effect was she lost interest in eating, and with her being 45 pounds at just turned 8 years old, that's NOT good - so now I'd prefer to keep her off medication for the Summer at least, maybe until October, but her Psychiatrist is recommending Strattera. But her regular (Primary Care) Doctor isw concerned about the effects these medications will have on her appetite, since most of the medications used to treat ADD/ADHD have the effect of decreased appetite/poor weight gain.
 
Most often it is a series of paper tests, and sometimes a computer test when available. They may do blood tests to rule out thyroid problems and other things.
Regular Dr.s say they can do this, but in my experience it is better to see the people who specialize in this-psychiatrists and psychologists.good luck.
