What goes good with beta fish?

I just bought my son a bet fish for his "first pet"(hes 3 years old). I was wondering if there is anything that can be put in with it that wont get eaten and is as easy to take care of. I like the beta because it only requires water and food with no aeration(not sure if spelled right).
I also want to make it clear I dont plan on buying an aerator anytime soon.
