What gets better mileage? Toyota 4 cyl car or Mazda Miata?

I am thinking of buying a second car used only for commuting 6 hours roundtrip a day, 3 days a week.

I am looking for a car that is well built, reliable and gets good mileage. I am also on a tight budget.

I have narrowed the search to a Mazda Miata (first generation) and any older Toyota car that has a 4 cylinder with manual transmission. (5 years or older.)

I will not be carrying any loads. It will just be me driving. What car would get better gas mileage?

The fewer the cylanders the faster the car. So a 4-cylander would be faster than a 6-cylander.

But the more cylanders the stronger/more powerful the car is.
