What gas kills people when they leave the car on in the garage?

My dad thinks that Carbonmonoxide kills you when you leave the car on in the garage, and I think that its carbondioxide. Which is it? I thought that it was the chemical reaction of combustion of gasoline, and it uses up all of the oxygen so you suffocate, but he still thinks that its CO and not CO2
