Hey robyn! heres your best bet:

Fancy guppies
Platies
Mollies

Assuming you mean "catfish", the only type of catfish you could fit in a 30 gallon are CORIES. you could get 6 of these for your tank as your bottom dwellers. Theyre very fun to watch!

Out of the guppies, mollies, and platies, i suggest you buy males only. The petsmart/petco seller will tell you which they are.

These fish are very Bright and colorful for such a tank!

Here are my numeric suggestions:
4 fancy guppies
4 male platies
4 balloon mollies
6 cories (albino are my favorite)

good luck! email me at: [email protected] and ill be at your service!

i want simple beginner fish.. ones that hopefully don't poop too much.. I want fish that can get along with a catfish..

I have a 30 gallon tank, with a heater, filter, and a few bubblers.. the tank was given to me.. i wanted a tiger oscar but i read that the tank is too small >.>

i would prefer to get colourful fish so that i can tell them apart lol
please help :(
lol thank you for the help!!

lol i don't have any fish right now other than my 2 male bettas (their in separate tanks but 1 of them doesn't seem very aggressive i thought about trying to put him with other fish)..

i guess you could get some big colorful fish, although clownfish are always fun to watch too. maybe a pufferfish? sorry i dont know that much about fish but i hope that helped somewhat.

Instead of guppies I would stick with the smaller barbs and tetras. The reason behind this is quite simple: due to the development of fancy strains guppies are far from as hardy as they used to be and they should be avoided unless you obtain them from a reputable source.

I would also advise against mollies as these ideally need brackish conditions. Stick to the smaller platies and endlers.

Aside from Corydoras catfish you could also try a small plec such as a single Panaque or Hypancistrus species such as the Clown plec (Panaque maccus, L104). It is important that you provide a small piece of bogwood as this contains a chemical known as lignin which is vital to aid digestion.

Finally Oscars (Astronotus ocellatus) are a definite no-no unless you are willing to upgrade the tank within a year or so.
