I have some unclean able algae on my tank, I have been to a fish shop and they told me the best way forward is to get a fish that lives off the algae. But what shall I get?

Although most scavenger fishes are also algae eater, there is difference between algae eating fish and scavenger fishes.

Most pleco are scavenger and algae eaters.Siamese algae eaters and ottos are algae eaters.

Yoyo loaches and White tip shark catfish are also algae eater but not true scavengers.

pleco's will dot he job but they will grow very big and they will get aggressive towards other fish when they get bigger so another choice are cory cats.i would recommend for you to get malayasian trumpet snails.they are the best algae cleaners.they will clean up all the algae in your tank and if you have live plants int he tank then they will grow more.pretty neat huh.and if your filter breaks and doesn't work then there is no problem your snails will work as a filter.but your question asks for a fish so then get some corys.but if i were you i would get the snails.
