Several variables need to be addressed:
• Do you live in an area that has a "real" winter, i.e., ice & snow?
If so, you may wish to consider an all-wheel drive vehicle. My
suggestion for first choice is the Subaru as they have the longest
history with all-wheel drive.
• What is the number of passengers you will be normally carrying?
• If you are thinking about getting a vehicle that comes from the
factory with "run flat" tires, think again. These tires are great if
you live in an urban environment where tire shops are common.
If, however, you live in a rural area, and a trip to the nearest tire
shop requires and all-day plan, you may be in for an expensive
disappointment. Most of the run-flat tires can only be used for
a trip of no greater than 50 miles at a top speed to not exceed
50 mph. AND...they are expensive, e.g., $250-$400 each. And,
once they are run in a flat/deflated condition, they must be
replaced. And...if the tread wear is such that an entire set must
be replaced, well, then...this could run into a lot of money.
• Keep in mind that with an all-wheel drive vehicle, tire replacement
criteria is very strict, i.e., usually if one tire needs to be replaced,
all four tires MUST be replaced. So, also shop for your vehicle
with the following thought in mind: The larger the wheel diameter,
(ex: 17", 18", 19"), the more expensive the tire.
Good luck.
