What exactly is the history of Brits in the Republic of Ireland?

I have ancestry from the Republic of Ireland (Galway to be exact) yet both names that i know of in my family who claim irish ancestry are of English and Scottish origin and they were protestants. Did this happen often or is this unique in some way. I always thought any non-ethnically irish protestant stayed exclusively in northern ireland and more often than not had some connection with the british occupation of ulster, and certainly wouldn't dare to live in a catholic irish community in the republic. I take it then that the citizens of Galway were pretty hospitable lol.
also, the part of my ancestry that is "irish" does seem a lot more irish ethnically than scottish. many of the physically features, mannerisms, etc. that are commonly associated with irish people they have, so i find it quite confusing.
