What exactly is dry sex?

I was at my boyfriends one day and we were making out on his sofa, like i was laying down and he was on top of me and my legs were round his waist, then he sort of like...well theres no way to describe it, he started to "hump" me, i wasn't uncomfortable with it or anything but he only did it for literally twenty seconds then he stopped, ok so my question is, is that "dry sex"? and also when he started he kept like...moaning and breathing heavily then he stopped, I've heard "dry sex" lasts for a while so why did he end so soon? thanks for the answers :) btw please dont say nasty stuff or anything...it's not my fault i dont know ;(
