What exactly is candy coating?

I was flipping through my 'Better Homes' ('Celebrating the Promise' limited edition) cook book today and decided I wanted to make the peanut butter balls they had in there. The recipe called for "chocolate flavored candy coating". I tried to just make it with melted Nestle chocolate chips and that did not work! Before I made them I looked at the local grocery store to see if they even had candy coating... I couldn't find any.
What exactly is candy coating? Where can I find it?
