What exactly does "be able to discuss literature in a historical context" mean?

Ok so I'm studying the old english period, medieval period, renaissance, elizabethan, 17th and 18th centuries. I'm not completely sure what historical context means. Basically just be able to give facts from those periods?
yeah, i know this is a dumb question.
