What equipment do I need to set up photography strobes?

I want to set up a mini studio that I can collapse and store and bring out as needed.

I want to take portraits to include full body shots. I have the backdrop. The cameras I currently have are: Canon DRebel and the Canon Elan 7 (film). I'd like to get a set up but just don't know what to buy.

A quick and dirty list of what is needed. I don't quite understand the lingo about "hot shoe" and "slave" and things of that nature since I've always done landscape photos without flash. So all help is appreciated. Thanks.
