The year was 1553 and the age of religious wars had started for Spain and England. Mary I of England ascended to the English throne after challenging Lady Jane Grey. Mary I who was a wildly known as a devout Catholic and trying to reconnect England to Catholicism. She also executed Protestants claiming there were heretics of the state. However due to her very unpopular marriage to King Philip II of Spain son of the powerful Charles V of the Holy Roman Empire, he was also a militant catholic due to his fathers view to help restore the empire though faith and in order to help spread Catholicism to England, it however politically backfired and caused her to lose her crown in England. Elizabeth I was the next in line for the English crown.

Elizabeth was known as a politique ( Smart political ruler that put the survival of the state on religious unity) for transitioning England back to Protestantism though the Act of Supremacy established in 1559 naming her supreme chancellor of all religions affairs that reside in England and reversing all anti protestant legislation passed by Mary I. Elizabeth I did this in order to gain popularity with Protestants and to unify England though religion this was considered a great political move by Elizabeth I in order to counter Spain Catholic views. Elizabeth I policy towards the northern state of Scotland was to oppose the French presence there, she feared that a coup was in place to replace her with Mary Queen of Scots a devout Catholic who was considered the true heir to the crown. Elizabeth I executed Mary queen of Scots in order to preserve her crown this gave Spain a reason to engage England and send over their juggernaught armada composing of 130 ships and several thousand soldiers.

In 1588 Spain sent over their juggernaut armada across the English channel in response to the execution of Marry queen of Scots. However there was a massive storm that forced the armada into the rocks and cliffs of England. England also had more maneuverable and evasive ships than Spain’s bloated Galleons. England won this battle of epic battle of proportions that would alter European history. From this battle Spain lost influence and prestige among other nations and the decline of Catholicism had began.
