Hi I want a larger dog which meets the following.
1. Protection (needs to have protective instincts for the house and for when I go walking)
2. Exercise to go walking and biking
3. Easy to train
4. Little to moderate grooming needs
5. Can do well with children (future needs)
6. Can do well with my two miniature schnauzers
7. Independent personality. Doesn't want to be under foot all the time.
8. Playful, can entertain itself with toys etc.
9. Enjoys being played with
Basically there has been a spike in houses being broken into in the city I live in, I would also like to have to have a larger dog to go walking with and to train to run along my bicycle.
I large dog who will make someone think twice about breaking in would be good but at the same time I still want it to be a good family dog.
I do not want a needy dog who must have my attention all the time but I would like to one which is playful and does enjoy attention. I guess I'm saying I want the attention to be on my terms not it begging for attention.
Last I would like it to have an easy coat to deal with. I'm willing to take it in to be clipped and / or brush it but I don't want any heavy shedding or heavy maintenance.
Any suggestions??
Dog Section Regular: I never said it was for personal protection. I said I want a dog which intimidating (versus attack which is what a personal protection dog is trained to do).
dhmcconniel: German Shepard shed heavily and they need to have their owners with them a lot.
To ALL others who are are not so quick to jump to conclusions.
Any dog which can come come / meet most requirements would also be nice.
I heard Great Danes could possible meet what I would like in a dog.
Dog Section Regular: "Protection" isn't the same as "personal protection" . Further on (if you read) I clarified and stated I want it be intimating . A personal protection dog is trained to attack . Stop jumping to conclusions.
baymast13: I did read up on Dobermans as well and they do seem to be a good choice and to fit what I am looking for.
I have also read many (if not all) of the qualities I am asking is used to describe a Doberman. Thank you.
I however was wondering if there are other breeds similar to a Doberman as well.
Dog Section Regular: I'm not the one who is confused as I never claimed I expect a dog to be a weapon. Now you are just making stuff up.
Moof: Hi and thank you and thank you for clarifying a few of the traits for German Shepherds. for part of my list , my concern is really for the dog as I both me and my husband work full time which keeps us from the house 9 -10 hour a day.
My concern for a GSD is they may not receive enough attention. Any thoughts?
Hi Moof thanks for the extra info. No, no. I do not want a puppy. I'm looking for one older than 1 year and already plan on adopting. I have an application out for a Giant Schnauzer rescue and plan on asking for more info on a Giant Schnauzer but more I read the more I think it may not be the breed I'm looking for.
I've also read about dobermans being intelligent but fairly independent. Same as Giant Schnauzers. I would like to talk to some owners about them more though.
Any suggestion on how to get to know a breed better?
Thank you for your help.
