what does vtec do? and is it avaiable in my 1996 honda civic vti sedan?

hi, im a noob but i was wondering what does vtec do? i hear all this natually inspired technology but what does it do and how do u turn it on? and does my 1996 civic vti sedan have a vtec? also, how to i activate a vitec? (can always try my mums 04 accord (accure) euro to see what vtec does if my civic doesn't have it) thanks.
 
i'm not sure exactly what it does to the engine but you get a power boost at around 5000 rpms...you can have it tuned to kick in whenever though. if you look at your engine it will say VTEC on the valve cover in big shiny letters if you have an engine with vtec.

you don't turn it on...it automatically kicks in when the rpms reach what it is tuned to kick in at
