What does this sentence mean (biology experts!)?

The study was placed on hold because microscopic cysts were discovered in test animals. The cysts were confined to the injury site, and non-proliferative.

So microscopic means very small;
confined to the injury site means it can't spread?
does non-proliferative means growing slowly?
and cyst is some sort of skin problem or something?
