What does the E symbol on my T-mobile dash mean?

I Just wanted to be sure I'm not being charged when the [E] symbol on my Dash appears. I have no internet plan. So what is the "data connection" on the communication manager mean when it is turned on? Because another [E] appears by the signal bars.
 
It stands for EDGE which is 2G, it just means that you have connection and could connect to the internet if you wanted to. You are not being charged for the E.
