What does the "A4" mean in A4 leaflet?

I know what a leaflet is, but I don't know what the A4 means, and I don't want to look like an idiot by asking the person that needs it. So, what do they mean by that, and if you can get me started in finding a tutorial that will teach me to create a two page one in Microsoft Publisher, you will get the best answer for this one.
