what does "sun, rising and mercury" mean?

My b'day is april 16th, that's aries (easy), but I ain't got a clue what sun, rising and mercury means? Someone just asked me my atrological info and I ain't got a clue what to tell him lol
help?
@astrospy: the moon is a planet? really? looks more like a satellite to me :) ..astrological teriminology is kinda confusing...
the sun is my favourite planet btw <3
