What does stairs and pillars in the background of a character in a movie mean?

Just watched Limbo, a movie a lot like primer, triangle, darko, etc...

[About the movie]
A man is shot on a rooftop, his life repeats that hour he was shot in. Everything in his city is repeated - but he has the ability to change the situations some. So he's capable of killing/raping because there's no consequence because his victims won't know about it in the next hour. End of the movie he uses his hour to save 1 man over and over again it seems.
This movie didn't emphasize the extremes the main character went from, to the character he became.
- Also, the movie had a 2nd main character, who - she basically acted stale and they didn't project how she was related to the main character enough. She basically held a couple of conversations and was said to be in the same situation as he was - the movie could have almost been made without her.
Either way, it was still a decent movie.

I'm wondering if they were using symbolism in this movie... I noticed stairs and pillars repeatedly behind the character - what do these mean in a movie?

Do stairs mean he's always struggling to go up something? Or struggling to get somewhere better?

I don't know, still learning the symbolism in movies that 99% of people overlook as well.

:P

Whatcha think?
