Hi guys! I'm sorry for being a noob but I'd really appreciate if you can explain the concept of "rooted." Thanks!!

Rooted means that you've enabled super user (or root) access. This is needed for some applications to run, like setcpu, or titanium backup. Rooting, along with changing the bootloader program (say to amon ra's recovery) enables the user to install a custom rom like cyanogenmod.

For the Nexus, its quite easy to root, but first you need to unlock the bootloader which voids your warranty and is not reversible.

In laymen's terms... rooting is like "unlocking" or "Jailbreaking" your device. The term "rooting" refers to gaining root access on the device (administrative rights).

This allows you to do things above and beyond the standard capabilities of your phone. You can load custom ROMs, root-only applications, etc.

root gives 100% control of your phone to you. its kinda like having administrative access in windows. rooting your phone "unlocks" or gives you that access to your device instead of the carrier or manufacturer.
