What does replacing a car black box do?

Basically I want my car to sound louder and more sporty but I don't fancy replacing the entire exhaust system and failing my MOT.

So Can I just put a black box on and get that nice sound and still get through my MOT?

If I wanted to get a little more performance out of it, again still being road legal, how would I do this with regards to exhaust systems?
