What does rationales mean in business?

hi im doing my BTEC Unit 1 Course Work which is "Exploring Business Activity".
and on of the task I have to do is this
"Find and briefly describe the aims and objectives of your chosen organisations and outline their rationales - why do they have these aims and objectives, what are their purpose."

so the two business I have chosen to do is ASDA and Sony.
i've described the aims and objectives of my two businesses but its the rationales bit that i don't understand.
so could you please explain how to do this and explain what rationales is?

A number of examples of such rationales are sales growth, profit maximization or (global) market leadership. If you would like to read more about it, try a search for "corporate strategy", "corporate objectives" or "mission statement" in any search engine.
