I was looking on google at pics of solid mercury, except i can't seem to find one.. There was on ethat said there wasa huge solid 'blob' or mercury in chicago millenium square.. Surely thats not possible, becasue of fumes.. Does anyone know where a good picture is? Or what it looks like?

when our class broke a thermometer once(by accident), the mercury looked silver. When you put a piece of mercury next to another piece of mercury it form one. It was cool.

Mercury freezes solid at -40 C. It looks like any shiny colorless metal, like silver or stainless steel. Unless the blob you heard about was in a deep freezer, it would have been liquid. Perhaps "solid" was term used incorrectly in your source, and they meant "mass" instead. With such a liquid, fumes indeed would be a public health issue, so it would have to be in an airtight container. The vapor pressure is very low, so this would not be difficult.
